Mine surveying is a branch of mining science and technology. It includes all measurements, calculations and mapping which serve the purpose of ascertaining and documenting information at all stages from prospecting to exploitation and utilizing mineral deposits both by surface and underground working.

 

It is important to maintain accurate plans for the use of current and future land users so that the positions of any potentially hazardous workings or infrastructure are permanently recorded.  Information must be adequate to ensure that adjacent mine workings do not accidentally connect, with risk of flooding, contamination or other safety hazards. Regulations may require minimum boundary pillars around mining properties.
